Sports cards are a $15+ billion global collectible market in 2026. The sport weighting has flipped over the last decade: basketball (led by Michael Jordan and modern rookies) is now the dominant category by dollar volume, followed by football (driven by Tom Brady and modern NFL rookies), then baseball. Hockey remains a smaller but devoted niche.
Baseball cards
Baseball is the oldest category — which means both the most classic and most counterfeited. The pre-war (1909–1948) era contains the single most valuable sports card ever — the T206 Honus Wagner, last publicly sold for $12.6 million in 2022. Post-war rookies to know: 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (#311), 1954 Topps Hank Aaron, 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente, 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan, 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr.
Modern baseball rookie RCs: Ronald Acuña Jr, Juan Soto, Shohei Ohtani and — of course — whichever current-year MLB debut is hot on the show circuit. For ultra-modern, Bowman Chrome 1st and Bowman Draft 1st Chrome Autos are the collector standard.
Basketball cards
Basketball is the category that sent the hobby into orbit in 2020–2021 and still dominates attention. Core cards every collector should know:
- 1986 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan RC — the defining modern basketball card. PSA 10 sells around $250k–$400k; PSA 9 around $5k–$10k.
- 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron James RC Auto Patch /99 — the chase of the Exquisite era. Last sale $5.2M.
- 2009-10 Panini National Treasures Stephen Curry RC Auto— Curry's flagship rookie. PSA 10 auto /99 copies have sold $400k–$1.5M.
- 2017-18 Prizm Donruss Luka Dončić RC, 2018-19 Trae Young Prizm RC, 2018-19 Prizm Deandre Ayton — accessible modern hobby staples.
In 2025–2026, Victor Wembanyama 1st-year cards are setting the rookie pace; Spectra, Select, Prizm, Court Kings and Crown Royale Wemby PSA 10s all command 3×–5× raw premiums.
Football cards
The NFL card market splits clearly: quarterbacks command the majority of value. Core cards:
- 2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady Rookie Ticket Auto — arguably the most important modern football card. PSA 10 auto copies have sold $2M+.
- 2017 Panini Prizm Patrick Mahomes RC — chase of the last decade. PSA 10 base $500–$1,500 depending on market.
- 2020 Prizm Justin Herbert, 2020 Prizm Joe Burrow, 2020 Prizm Justin Jefferson — the 2020 QB class.
- 2024 Prizm Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye — current QB rookie class.
Hockey cards
Smaller niche, but passionate. The king is the 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky RC, with PSA 10 copies now trading $1.5M+. Modern hockey: Connor Bedard 2023-24 Young Guns Upper Deck, Connor McDavid 2015-16 Young Guns, Auston Matthews 2016-17 Young Guns. Upper Deck Young Guns is the defining modern hockey rookie parallel.
How sports card pricing works
Unlike TCG cards, sports card pricing is heavily driven by on-field performance, moment-to-moment narrative, and comp sales. The best price sources:
- eBay Sold Listings — the ground truth. Filter to Sold + Completed.
- PSA Auction Prices Realized — graded comps.
- 130point — aggregates recent eBay sales with population data.
- Card Ladder / PWCC Marketplace — high-end sports card comps.
Why grading matters even more for sports cards
