CGC Trading Cards (sometimes called CGC Cards) launched in September 2020 as the card division of Certified Collectibles Group — the same parent that runs CGC Comics, the dominant comic book grader since 2000. The pitch was simple: cheaper prices and faster turnaround than PSA, with the reliability of a major certification company behind it.
Five years in, CGC has carved out a legitimate third-place spot in the trading card grading market. It's not yet at PSA's secondary-market premium, but the cost and speed advantages are real — and some collector segments genuinely prefer the CGC slab aesthetic.
CGC service levels and costs (2026)
| Service | Max value | Price per card | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Value | $400 | $18 | 20 biz days |
| Value+ | $1,000 | $27 | 15 biz days |
| Economy | $2,500 | $35 | 10 biz days |
| Standard | $10,000 | $75 | 5 biz days |
| Express | $50,000 | $150 | 3 biz days |
CGC does notrequire a paid membership. No $99 Collectors Club fee like PSA — just pay per card. That's a meaningful savings for casual submitters.
How CGC grades
CGC uses the standard 1–10 scale in half-point increments. Grades above 9.5 go: 9.5 Gem Mint, 10 Gem Mint, 10 Pristine (10/10/10/10 equivalent). The Pristine label is CGC's top tier, analogous to BGS Black Label. Optional sub-grades are available for a small additional fee (roughly +$3/card).
Methodology is similar to PSA and BGS: centering, corners, edges, surface. In practice, CGC is often described as stricter than PSA on surface (catches more print lines) and slightly more generous on centering. Your mileage will vary — consistency across graders is a moving target and there's no universally “easier” grader.
CGC secondary market premium
This is where CGC's limitations show up. Across most major categories, CGC slabs sell for 60–85% of a PSA equivalentin 2026. A Pokemon Charizard in PSA 10 trading at $500 might sell in CGC 10 at $320–$420. That discount is narrowing but real, and it's the central tradeoff.
When the CGC discount makes sense
Where CGC wins
- Modern Pokemon bulk: $18/card and 20-day turnaround is unbeatable.
- Personal collections:if you're grading to slab your binder rather than resell, CGC looks great on display and costs 40% less.
- Flipping velocity:the 15–20 business day turnaround matters when you're cycling capital.
- Pristine cards:CGC Pristine 10 is CGC's flex product, and some buyers pay premiums for it on modern inserts.
Where CGC loses
- Any vintage submission — PSA is the vintage standard and pays for itself in market premium.
- Auction-house-bound cards — PSA dominates Goldin, PWCC, and Heritage.
- Sports cards — basketball/football/baseball collectors have historically favored PSA and BGS.
- Cards you plan to sell via eBay within a year — PSA converts faster at every price point.
CGC slab quality
CGC slabs are optically clear, thicker than PSA, and widely considered the most attractive slab on the market by collectors who display their cards. The newer Pokemon slabs use a perfect-fit insert that eliminates card rattling. If you're grading for show-and-tell rather than resale, this alone is a legitimate reason to pick CGC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CGC as reputable as PSA?
In authentication terms, yes. CGC has a deep track record from comics and its trading card grading has been trusted since 2020. In secondary market premium, no — CGC slabs generally sell below PSA comps.
How long does CGC grading actually take?
CGC reliably hits its posted business-day turnarounds, which is one of its strongest selling points. Value tier (~20 business days) typically lands 25–30 calendar days door-to-door.
Can I crack a CGC slab and resubmit to PSA?
Yes. You can break out of any slab (destroying the case but preserving the card) and resubmit elsewhere. PSA offers a Crossover service that does it for you. Only worth doing if the expected PSA grade adds enough market value to cover fees and risk.
Does CGC grade sports cards?
Yes, but sports cards are only ~10% of CGC's card volume. PSA and BGS dominate sports. CGC is strongest in modern TCG (Pokemon, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece).
Is CGC 10 Pristine the same as BGS Black Label?
Conceptually similar — both represent the top of the scale. CGC Pristine is rarer than CGC 10 but not priced as aggressively as BGS Black Label on most cards. The market premium on Pristine 10 is still being established.
If cost is your constraint, CGC is the right answer for most modern TCG submissions. For anything vintage, auction-bound, or premium sports — see our PSA Guide or BGS Guide for the alternatives.
