Charizard is the single most iconic trading card in the world. Across 200+ unique printings from 1999 to today, the orange fire dragon anchors Pokemon's entire secondary market. The 1999 Base Set Charizard is the card non-collectors have heard of — the one that opened the door to the modern card hobby. This guide covers every major Charizard version in order of value.
Tier S: The vintage icons
1999 1st Edition Shadowless Base Charizard (4/102)
PSA 10: $300,000–$420,000 · PSA 9: $25,000–$40,000 · PSA 8: $8,000
The card that launched a thousand collectors. Released in English in January 1999. The Shadowless 1st Edition print run was extremely small before WOTC added drop shadows to Base prints. PSA 10 has a population of only ~130 in 2026; demand vastly exceeds supply. A non-negotiable crown jewel.
1999 Unlimited Shadowless Base Charizard (4/102)
PSA 10: $50,000–$80,000 · PSA 9: $3,500–$5,500 · PSA 8: $1,200
Same art and layout as 1st Edition but without the “1st Edition” stamp. The Shadowless version preceded the Unlimited print run with drop shadows. Much larger population but still highly collected.
1999 Unlimited Base Charizard (4/102)
PSA 10: $12,000–$18,000 · PSA 9: $1,200–$2,000 · PSA 8: $500
The most accessible WOTC Base Charizard. Has the drop shadow on the art box. Large population in mid-grades. The Charizard most people actually own.
Tier A: The modern-vintage bridge
2002 Neo Destiny Shining Charizard
PSA 10: $15,000–$22,000 · PSA 9: $2,500 · Raw NM: $500–$800
The Shining subset's crown jewel. Alternate color palette (silver and black vs the classic orange). Low PSA 10 population, high demand.
2002 Expedition Charizard (40/165)
PSA 10: $6,000–$9,000
e-Card era Charizard. Holographic reverse holo versions add 30–50% premium. Lower population than most vintage.
2003 Skyridge Crystal Charizard (146/144)
PSA 10: $25,000–$40,000 · PSA 9: $5,500 · Raw NM: $1,800
One of the most difficult-to-grade vintage Charizards due to its full-holo Crystal treatment. PSA 10 population under 60.

Counterfeits and alterations
Charizard is the most counterfeited Pokemon card ever. Common tells:
- Light test: authentic holo Charizards transmit light through the non-holo portions. Fakes are often fully opaque.
- Rip test: real cards have a black layer in the card stock cross-section. Fakes are usually white all the way through.
- Print dot pattern: under 10× magnification, authentic cards show CMYK rosette patterns; fakes often show coarse dither.
- Font weight:counterfeit “Fire Spin” attack text frequently has slightly bolder weight or misaligned kerning.
For any Charizard over $500, buying in a PSA/BGS/CGC slab is the safest path. Pre-graded cards remove counterfeit risk from the equation.
Charizard investment outlook 2026
- Unlimited Base Charizard is the best accessible entry point — liquid, iconic, and below-peak pricing. Target PSA 9 for $1,500.
- Shining Charizard (Neo Destiny) has the best asymmetric upside given low graded population.
- 151 Charizard ex IR is the modern card most likely to enter long-term rotation into future blue-chip status.
- Avoid common modern Charizard ex cardsin small ungraded quantities — they're printed heavily and appreciation is muted.
